FALL SPAWNING: [WADING]

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

It’s that time of year again! Pumpkin spice browns 😍🔥

Please be wary of where you step! We are starting to see some redds pop up in some creeks on shallow gravel. It's a bit early so please don’t undermine what you see. Be mindful of where you’re wading.

GOOD RULE OF THUMB: If you need to cross the river is find water at least knee deep or deeper with a non-gravel bottom. If you’re wading in a gravel stretch stay close to the banks and DO NOT wade down the middle of it. Redds are the “nests” that trout make to lay their eggs. Redds are a really SHINY area of gravel, usually about a 1-2ft wide and can even be several feet long if multiple fish used the same spot. They literally look like the gravel is GLOWING WHITE. If anyone has questions about what redds look like, or want to talk about sustainable practices to use on fishing outings this time of year and through the Winter (because those gravel areas will serve as nurseries and incubators for the next generation of wild Iowa brown trout and brook trout), PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO REACH OUT to me personally, or leave a comment.
